Jahquan Hawkins
Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance towards the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point.

About Me

A native of Detroit, MI, Jahquan C. Hawkins has established himself not only as an authority in the Higher Education arena but a dynamic public speaker with an emphasis on college student success.  Jahquan has an extensive background in the academy at both 2-year and 4-year institutions with experience as an Academic Advisor, Instructor, Coordinator of Student Development and Dean of Campus Affairs.

Jahquan is living proof that, with the proper support system and training, there is no limit to an individual’s educational success. The completion of his first book; Finding My Way, has been a labor of love for Jahquan, because he, like many in the targeted audience for this book, had to overcome the obstacle of being a first-generation college student when he began work on his undergraduate degree some years ago.  He now travels the country; facilitating college success workshops that help empower students to reach their full potential both inside and outside of the classroom.  In his spare time, Jahquan volunteers with organizations such as Detroit Kappa League, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and My Brother's Keeper as a mentor and community partner.  Jahquan resides in the metropolitan Detroit area with his wife, Sherikia, and their son Donovan.

Making the transition into college can be an exciting, yet scary step in a student’s life, and rarely does this journey come with a comprehensive set of instructions as to how students will find their way to the finish line.  Jahquan Hawkins uses both the struggles he faced as a first-time college student and his professional lens as a current higher education professional, to offer students sincere, yet proven counsel when it comes to navigating the path from admission to graduation.  Whether you’re a traditional student, fresh out of high school, or a returning student who brings some life experience to the classroom, Finding My Way is a tool you’ll want to equip yourself with as you set forth on your mission to become a college completer.

Jahquan facilitated a session entitled ‘The Power of Initiation’ for my students in winter 2015, and his session was truly insightful. He focused on embracing the uncomfortable feeling of being a change agent. I can attest that the feedback from his session assured me that my students were positively impacted from the workshop. I’m thankful for the strategies Jahquan bestowed upon my students to help them be successful in achieving their future goals.

Jahquan Hawkins’ address to our graduates was relevant and on point. He delivered a straightforward, honest message from a place of sincerity that captured the attention of those in the audience who were college bound, as well as others who identified with him. Dean Hawkins conveyed fundamental truths in a manner that was not only thought-provoking, but also motivational. I am still appreciative of the time and wisdom he contributed, as he even made himself available for questions after the program concluded. I can’t thank Jahquan enough for sharing with us.

I wish I had this book before I started my freshman year in college. It contains lessons I had to learn the hard way. Hawkins’s book gives valuable insight that every college student needs.
